Posada Mayor de Migueloa, La Rioja

Hotel. Originally built in 1619 by Don Martin Sanchez Samaniego, the Posada Mayor de Migueloa reopened in 1992 with a facelift bringing the amenities into the modern era. Now complete with eight bedrooms, a full service restaurant and a superb wine cellar, the hotel leaves a lasting impression on all of its guests. Situated in Laguardia in the heart of La Rioja, guests are fully immersed in the viticulture and the landscape. Nearby, history is just waiting to be uncovered. Monasteries dot La Rioja and many are open to the public or anyone looking into religious and cultural tourism. But still, the heart of La Rioja’s beauty lies in its wines.

Wine. Interestingly enough, Laguardia has evolved into a mostly pedestrian town because so many houses and buildings have wine cellars beneath them. It is no surprise then that Posada Mayor de Migueloa has a wine cellar of its own. Built in 1619 with the rest of the original house, the wine cellar is one of the oldest in the Rioja Designation of Origin. Still in working condition, the steady relative humidity and constant temperature provide the perfect state for generating the high quality wines of the La Rioja region. The hotel invites its guests to book wine tasting sessions as well as visits to the wine cellar, for it truly is a historic once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Dining. Decorated in the same Gentle Baroque style as the rest of the hotel, the restaurant at the Posada Mayor de Migueloa is well known for its distinguished and delicious cuisine throughout Northern Spain. And of course all of the meals are not complete without a bottle of aged wine from the Mayor de Migueloa winery. The restaurant’s space can easily be converted for private dining or company gatherings.
